4 out of 5 stars Actually a good game   August 7, 2008
I had a couple questions after reading the reviews like others but the game is far from unplayable. I haven't experienced any noticable lag yet (the kind where you are like 'Okay this is messing up my experience' or something like that) just a couple spots here and there that don't really register in your conscious until a couple minutes later.

Load times are not a big deal either, although if you finish levels quickly in Portal they can be irritating. (The first couple levels are hella easy and you can pass them in less then a minute so having a load time every minute is a little tedious but as the levels get harder, it takes longer and longer to finish the levels so you won't be affected by it after 4-5 load times or so)

All in all, its a great game, best bang for your buck imaginable . Also, I reccomend the Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection if you have a BC PS3 because you are probably into playing great games regardless of their age if you like TOB.

2 out of 5 stars PS3 version of Orange Box a Bad Buy   July 29, 2008
3 out of 5 found this review helpful

Let me state at the outset that I am a fan of the Half Life series, and own the Orange Box for PC. I think the game itself is outstanding - one of the best video game experiences ever created.

The Playstation 3 port of the Orange Box is a disappointment. Frame rate issues haunt several areas of the game. Audio issues, ranging from missing sounds to crackling and even audio cutting out completely, are everywhere. For me, I noticed the most audio issues in Portal, the least technically complex of the games included in this package. I am not an online gamer, but reportedly the Team Fortess 2 component is sorely lacking - you are unable to host your own games, the servers are "laggy" and often off-line, and the maps are full of exploits which have been patched in the PC version, and mitigated somewhat in the Xbox 360 version.

The real problem with this game, that make it a bad buy in my opinion, is that you are buying an orphan. The Orange Box for the PS3 is the red-headed stepchild of the video game world, and neither parent, EA nor Valve, are taking responsibility for it. Gamers have been requesting patches to address the faults in the game since it was released in October of 2007. "Support" at EA says it is Valve's responsibility to fix the game. Valve, who aren't PS3 developers, say it is EA's job. While the two game studios point fingers at each other and duck responsibility, consumers who have paid a premium price for an unfinished product are left holding the bag (or the box, in this case).

Do not buy this product if you are expecting a polished game experience. If you cannot live without the Half Life 2 series on your PS3, by all means, this flawed, half baked attempt is the only way you are going to satisfy your craving. But go into this purchase with your eyes open - this game is buggy, and nobody seems willing to fix it. EA and Valve will take your money and ignore your troubles.

4 out of 5 stars "beau-ti-fu-el"   July 27, 2008
I used to think that console gaming was becoming increasingly boring as the days go by, till I've bought The Orange Box.

Team fortress is simply amazing. Yeah, I know it's a shooter. But it's not a simple shooter: it is an amazing shooter. You gotta play it to understand it... There's not enough words to explain why I've spent so many hours hooked to it, exploding buddies around the globe.

Nice try by Portal on proposing new playing experiences, but it's still like a revamped edition of echocrome - not much action really.

And I've never played the Half Life saga, as it's a non-multiplayer linear game, which made me push down the rating stars from 5 to 4... but I promise I'll play it someday, if I lost my internet connection =)

The only shame is the almost-useless empty booklet, with not enough information on strategies, controls, point/award strategies and a whole lot of missing information...

Yet you can still get the Prima Official Game Guide to complete a nice bundle, here:

5 out of 5 stars "Stuttering" vastly exaggerated   July 22, 2008
This review is for the PS3 version of Half Life2. (Amazon tends to lump all reviews together) I have not played the Xbox or PC versions, so this is a review, and NOT a comparison.

Having read numerous reviews complaining about the dropped frame and slow load times on the PS3 version of this game, I had all but convinced myself to buy the PC version instead. Then I found the PS3 version used for cheap and bought it anyway. And I'm very happy with it! I've had exactly 1 dropped frame so far and am over 3/5 the way through the game. (e.g. I had NO stuttering or dropped frames in the boat chase chapter despite what the 1UP.com reviewers claimed.) The graphics are nice, and I've had over 20 moving objects on screen at one time with no problems. (That's not counting the bullets!) So I think this issue has been overblown a bit. The online Team Fortress has also performed smoothly with zero stuttering.

As to the load times, yeah, they're a little slow. About 37 seconds, in point of fact (just timed one). I'm happy for you Xbox and PC owners if yours is significantly shorter, but frankly that's about the same or less loading time as other games I play on the PC and the PS3. (The Sims2 takes almost 3 minutes to load at times!)

Finally, you can quicksave at any time! Repeat, at ANY time!! Furthermore, you can still move around and fight while quicksaving! This feature has proved invaluable time and time again.

All in all, very happy with a great game!

5 out of 5 stars No Excuse to miss out on this   July 17, 2008
Seeing as the price has come down quite a bit since release there is really no reason to miss out on this experience.

If you like first person shooters the Half-Life Series is top notch.

If you like multiplayer Team Fortress 2 is a lot of fun.

And everyone needs to experience Portal.

You get a lot of entertainment in this package. The only reason not to get this would be if you don't like first person perspective games.
