5 out of 5 stars Wonderful time killer, average story   October 10, 2008

Viking follows the warrior Skarinn, a Viking with epileptic seizures who has been selected as the champion of Freya against the forces of Hel, Lokis daughter, who has raised an undead army to conquer Midgard.

Viking is as straightforward a beat-em-up as you can find. The game plays like a drawn out guerilla campaign. Raise your forces, find them supplies and reinforcements, and assualt various positions held by the unded Legion. These missions are fairly straightforward and have little in the way of variety, thoguh finding the proper path forward can be a trial at times.

The graphics give this game its best punch. The combat plays in slow motion at times, during fatalities and other gruesome swordplay, which'll slake any devotee of the Blood-and-guts god. The enemies and other Vikings are rather cookie cutter, but the action is fast paced enough you'll barely notice. The atmosphere is also well handled, and though there are some nasty glare moments, the effect serves to highlight the difference in sides. Hels controlled areas are dark and foreboding, with rolling stormclouds and dreary, depressing showers, whereas Freyas land is bright and cheery, with butterflies and birdsong.

Gameplay is simple and straightforward. You buy higher level abilities, but otherwise the game follows a rather predictable pattern: get overwhelmed and you're hosed. Magic makes a useful appearance, and is a significant boon during the assualts that periodically happen throughout the game. In addition to setting your sword afire with a flame spell, you'll also grant the same effect to every Viking within reach, making it a very worthwhile strategic spell.

The story is passable, but nearly glossed over in gameplay. While the story and dialouge between Hel and Freya is a nice counterpoint, you'll want to get to the next fight so badly you won't really care what they're saying. The visions that Skarin has throughout the game are a better story element, as well as the beautiful cel shaded storybook scenes between levels.

3 out of 5 stars Fun Budget Title for Adventure, RPG, or Hack&Slash Fans   October 5, 2008

Surprise sleeper hit from SEGA that has very good production (music, voice acting, scenery) and entertainment vaule (gameplay). Drawing some serious inspiration from games like the Lord of the Rings series atmosphere, FABLE's questing, and BloodRayne series' combat style (think vicous sword fatalities), VIKING is a B-rate hack-&-slasher that tries really hard to please it's audience.

Falling just short of greatness, there are gameplay issues: the graphics are good last-gen quality, but the water looks nice; there are some issues with the camera in melee combat when facing large groups; the concept of being supported by a viking army and your own dragons was seriously under used. Seriously, don't make me sneak and fight my way in to a town to rescue a group or retrieve an artifact by myself when the game has given me an actual army but only lets me use it on specific missions. That really defeats the whole purpose of recruiting the army if you can't choose how to deploy it. Not a "Game of the Year" nominee, but definately worth a weekend rental or reduced price. I can see sequel potential in this CONAN-like title.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo Sega!!   September 18, 2008

What a great game! I have not had this much fun with a game in a while! I usually don't play games from franchises that I'm not already familiar with, but I really took an interest in this game. I've put many hours into it, and I can say that I'm fully satisfied!

Beautiful, lush, and lively environments, filled with tons of warriors, are at the forefront of this games attractions. The ocean is the coolest I've EVER seen in a video game! The graphics really are amazing, as well as the character interaction, quest advancement, and game depth.

I highly recommend Sega's new masterpiece, Viking!!!

5 stars, thumbs up!!

4 out of 5 stars Lovely bloody violence   September 10, 2008
I think this game is a little underrated. While people can dismiss this game as a middle-of-the-road hack & slash, there are some innovations that make it quite entertaining.

First off, the controls are easy and intuitive; the basic moves are strong attack, quick attack, jump and block. There are special attack moves and projectiles that you can purchase. Finishing moves and executions are done by simply pressing the a and/or x button. There's not much to remember, the learning curve is low.

This is an open world type of game, on each map (there are 3 huge maps) there are objectives you need to achieve, such as rescue Viking prisoners, find a key/item, clear out a watch tower etc. After all these 'mini' objectives are met, you then attack the city/fortress on the map. This is the main objective of each map, and these battles are quite spectacular, involving hundreds of friendlies and enemies.

Also, its not a case of simply charging at the enemy to cut them up; some situations require you to sneak up on unwary enemies and slice them in half.

The selling point of the game is the bloody, gory, slow-motion violence. Slicing off heads and hacking off limbs are done in juicy detail and certainly satisfy my blood lust. Both graphics and audio are great. In all, this game is fairly easy and straight forward, and is quite an adventure.

4 out of 5 stars straight to video   September 8, 2008
Viking is one of those games best described as a straight to video movie. They pop up all of a sudden with little fanfare, in hopes of making enough money to justify making it, and then vanishing from memory. I bought it as a fluke, seemed interesting and it wasn't a bad game though. You play a viking warrior working for a viking god. You hack and slash through multitudes of fighters in dramatic war scenes, but before that you have various missions to do on several islands. Some missions are stealth, which is somewhat fun. You have finishing moves, unfortunatly they are few, so you usually do the same ones over and over again. This is not distracting, though, but it could have been better, at least adding a few more. Your enviroment changes as you kill more enemies (ie: villages become brighter, more missions open up). The graphics are an A+ but that doesn't help the repetitive game play. Still it's not very bad. Get it once the price drops even more and if you don't expect a Gears of War or Halo 3 and you won't be disappointed.
