Its about time November 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Its about time a mind blowing RPG that takes away your social life for hours on end is released into the world! FALLOUT 3 is that game. This is probably one of the best RPGs I have touched in awhile. The concept is so original, the weapons, armor, and combat system are all fun. People that are giving this game bad reviews were probably thinking this was a shooter game...Its an RPG first off, then a shooter.. two concepts I would have never thought would be put together but bethseda pulled it off. The game does have a few glitches, but nothing I would give a one star review for. My opinion and many other peoples remain that this is a five star game worthy of everyones time. period.

Strolling through the Wasteland November 14, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Five stars means that once I start I cannot put the game down. Having lived in Washington DC for six years, I actually locate some of the buildings by memory. When I have a few minutes, I sit down just to advance my character along and suddenly find I am late for something else.
The non scripted path through the game is just fine as the individual quests are interesting and absorbing in and of themselves. Also, the inside jokes are well placed. The quest called THOSE is an obvious reference to the 1950s movie THEM, and the rogue android an obvious reference to Blade Runner.
The Guide for the game is hundreds of pages long which speaks to the depth of the game and the size of the map. While you should use a guide to supplement your playthrough, there is so much in the game that you would miss that it is worth using to catch the little extras that have been thrown in.
Overall, the Graphics are good but not as sharp as in some other releases, but believe me, once started you will not care. As with the other reviews, it should be clear that if this game sounds like something you would enjoy, then you will.
avoid November 14, 2008 0 out of 12 found this review helpful
pretty bad. honestly, this game slows down and heats up my system bad.
id rather have a smaller world to explore with more in it. the good things? i like how you can customize your 3rd person view with pans and zooming then set it and forget it! cool feature, or play first person! graphics are nice, VATS ( the gore and blowing heads off owns ) is the stop action targeting system. its kinda cool , you tell it where u wanna target and which enemy if more then 1. with a hit percentage ) chance of hit )
the bad : no action. slow slow slow, in the beginning, finally when u leave the vault, its one huge boring post nuke world. boring. drab. pointless, redundant. lame.
game has good graphics, thats all.
get resistance 2, dead space, c.o.d.-w.a.w., little big planet, moto gp 08 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( other favs of old: timeshift, darkness, f.e.a.r. , unreal tourn 3 )
id also say rent this first, i did and i cant wait to return it!
fallout 3 = caca.
lame. also avoid half life 2 orange box. garbage.
the next ones to get will be prince of persia and fear 2 project origin
maybe nfs undercover ?
DO NOT BUY - GAME ENDING BUGS November 11, 2008 4 out of 14 found this review helpful
I was looking forward to this game being a huge fan of Fallout 1 and 2. I have played this game several hours and I am extremely disappointed in the end product. There are so many bugs that I cannot believe they are taking people's money for this game. If you check the Bethesda Fallout 3 PS 3 Hardware forum you will see what I am talking about. I am not only talking about minor graphical glitches (which there are many of - ex. black screen for haircuts), I am talking about GAME ENDING bugs. The game will freeze in certain areas, your controller will stop working, and the only thing you can do is reset your system. This happens during one of the main storyline quests, making progression impossible. This also happens during various sidequests and sometimes while exploring. In other areas, when trying to exit/enter an area, the game will load a black screen and will require another reset. These are not fixed simply by reloading the game and trying again. It will again freeze or load a black screen. Even if you load an earlier save, if you go back to the area the freezing/black screens persist. It is something about the particular area that is bugged. You cannot do anything to progress. NPCs also have a habit of disappearing/dying from spawning at a great height then falling to their deaths. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. THE GAME IS BROKEN.
Leave all assumptions at the door... November 10, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Fallout 3 is an amazing game.
Most whom view the previews or commercials may assume this to be your typical 3rd person shooter, but stop right there! You couldn't be anymore wrong. Fallout 3 is infact an RPG element game, with shooting and melee action. Both in the 1st & 3rd person view perspective. The unique VATS system implements a turn style RPG element into battle where you must choose where to attack an opponent's body once the VATS system is chosen. Be it rather his/her limbs or head. You are then given an accuracy percentage on all the body parts shown as to which is more likely to land a hit with the attack. You then base your strategy in battle based on this, and 1st or 3rd person live action shooting and melee action.
So in reality, Fallout 3 is a 1st/3rd person Action-Adventure-RPG-Shooter.
And it doesn't stop there, either. The game has many more RPG elements such as AP for the VATS combat system (so you can't just easily win/use VATS all the time - it must be recharged rather automatically slowly in battle, or with the use of items) but also an HP system (for life) as well. It's really nothing you'd expect it to be at all. This game will appeal to both FPS fans and RPG fans.
Also to note, this was made using the engine that crafted The Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion. Thus you may expect Bethesda (the game's developers) to implement an RPG element into it, while also allowing live action. Speaking of Oblivion, this game is very reminiscent of it, and almost feels like a polished version of it, infact. But don't let that stop you from buying it. Fallout 3 is great, and although seemingly an advanced Oblivion, it's still very, very addicting.
That's not to say that Fallout 3 doesn't have it's flaws, however. The game comes riddled with bugs no matter what version you play. Frequent game freezes may happen, and odd weird graphical glitches or character glitches may at times happen, as well. But none of this really seems to matter with this game. You'll love it and still want to continue it, regardless. So don't let any glitches you hear about, stop you from playing it.
The graphics are quite nice. It looks like oblivion, only blown up (destroyed). Beautifully blown up. It also looks like a post-apocalyptic Washington, DC as well. Just as it was meant to. Also, the music is great. But not much selection when it comes to in-game radio stations. There are only 2 to work with, and the 2nd one (the more interesting of the 2) will only come in well after a quest is fulfilled in-game. However, the in-game music is good. It could be beefed up a bit at times, but it really does carry that stranded feel to it. Just as it should.
The game has optional quests you can undertake as well, which can be done at ANY time during the game. This means that this game is an open-ended sandbox of fun. You can go anywhere you want, anytime you want. You can explore the huge world and discover everything, follow sidequests, or stick to the main story. Also, another element of RPG that ties into this subject is the ability to choose your own character's karma, ALA the Shin Megami Tensei series (another RPG favorite of mine). You can choose to be rather good or evil. Follow evil characters and do as they say, or vice-versa. You can also kill anyone you want in the game. Be they good or bad. But remember, this will come with it's realistic set of consequences...killing a good character or breaking into someone's house and or stealing (something you primarily do in most RPGs for items) can actually land the entire village attempting to kill you. So remember, bad karma will come at it's price...fun as it may be.
Your character levels up in true RPG fashion, but this only caps to level 20 no matter what difficulty you set the game to (another of it's features). Upon leveling up you can tweak you main character's growth stats and perks, which grant various abilities and damage bonuses. Amongst other neat features.
You interact with main characters through dialogue choices/actions that range from neutral to evil (again, ala the SMT series) which does effect your karma. This in turn effects which of the game's multiple endings you will recieve. Thus giving the game a distinctly high replay value.
The controls are great and easy to understand and get used to, and the game's interface is great. There is a weight limit to how much your character can hold. This will not prevent you from going over that weight limit if you wish to (allowing you to carry substantially more items), but the result of this will limit you to losing the ability to run and use the teleport ability (allowing you to instantly go to any town you've already visited).
As for the story...your character was born in vault 101 to protect him, and it's inhabitants from a nuclear holocaust in Washington, DC. Eventually (for reasons not spoiled here) your character leaves the vault to begin his or her quest. That's all i'm going to tell you...play the game to find out the rest.
So...Fallout 3 seems like quite a perfect if not near-perfect game. Everything seems quite realistic, and overall Fallout 3 is probably one of the best games to grace any gamer in awhile. And it just may turn out to be not even what you may have expected it to be (a typical FPS).
So in turn...I highly suggest F/TPS fans, and RPG fans alike to purchase Fallout 3. It's a great game, that despite it's bugs and good but could be better graphics (when it comes to character models, not the enviroment - which is perfect) it's a must-own game for anyone who wants a lage open-ended game with plenty to do and see. Just don't go into it expecting an FPS. Because you'll be in for the most beautifully crafted shock of your life.
5/5 - This game is a definite buy.
