4 out of 5 stars NASCAR 2001- A Detailed Review   July 16, 2008
NASCAR 2001 was the first Nascar video game I ever played, and I had all kinds of fun with it when I played it with my cousin. Just recently, I purchased a game system, and thought how totally awesome it would be if I had NASCAR 2001, and it did not let me down. Let me start out by saying that this game is a particularly user-friendly game; it is easy to understand, and it's game play, vibrant colors and graphics, and nostalgia of past drivers like Dale Earnhardt, Kenny Irwin jr. and Adam Petty (all have unfortunately passed away, R.I.P), add to the enjoyment of the game. However, it is not exactly the most realistic of Nascar simulations, which is great if you are like me, who does not want a perfect simulation, rather a fun, enjoyable game that will keep you hooked playing it for a long time. Now, once you load the game in your Playstation 2 or Playstation 3 console (yes, it works like a charm in PS3), it will give you a choice of game modes; Quick race, 1 or 2 player, and championship mode. You can choose from 37 drivers, and 10-12 tracks... I do not know the exact number. You will find it is missing such key tracks as Homestead, Texas, New Hampshire, Michigan, Las Vegas, Rockingham, and Phoenix, but still is a great game in the tracks it does offer, and even offers Bristol-Night and Daytona-Night. Once you have selected these options, it's time to race. You can run practice, qualifying, and then race, or choose as you go along. It may appear strange that only 20 cars start the race, which is OK if you don't like a big field of cars. The controls of this game are a little slow, so when cornering, you might want to turn early, as to prepare for the actual corner. Be careful turning, as the car tends to jump loose on you (Be ready to avoid a spin!), but is easily corrected. However, if you run the high lane, especially at Daytona, your car can tend to not turn at all, so be ready to have to lift off the gas or go into the wall. You can adjust the race length to your liking in the options menu, which is a feature I appreciate because I love sprint racing personally. Also in the options menu, you can adjust the difficulty (rookie, veteran, or legend) and the race game mode (arcade or simulation... simulation being the more realistic and arcade being more user friendly), as well as turning on and off yellow flags, speed comp, a.k.a. catch-up, and other game options to suit your preferences. After the race, the game will self-prepare a highlight reel, all on you, showing any key moves of wrecks you had in the race, which is fun to watch. After that, you will be taken back to the menu where you will be able to set up another race, or choose a different game mode if you like. Now be aware, that during a race, certain physics of the cars seem slightly bizarre, like the lack of the bump-drafting ability. I mean, if you even attempt to do so, all that will happen is a shower of sparks flies out, and, if anything, YOU SLOW DOWN! (This actually worked better for me in NASCAR 2000 for the PC) Also, if for some reason you tap the wall, or let off the gas for some reason, it is very hard to catch up to the pack again, even with speed-comp on, which is REDICULOUS!!!! It's reasons like this that keeps it from being a half-realistic game. Over all, however, I give this game a four-star rating. It's an awesome game, with a few little problems, but still a very cool game that will keep you hooked on it for a while after you purchase it. EA did a great job, especially if you take into consideration that EA can really be a pathetic NASCAR designer, and I actually enjoyed this more than some of the newer games from them. Thank you, and enjoy your game.

4 out of 5 stars Better the Heat   June 13, 2002

This game is not the Best NASCAR game on the market any more (NASCAR Thunder 2002 and the soon to be released 2003 are better versoins of this game), but it is better then NASCAR Heat 2002... . If you like NASCAR or racing games and don't want to spead a lot of money - this is a perfect pick up right now to get started on you PS2.

4 out of 5 stars INTIMIDATE THIS   August 13, 2001

I ORIGINALLY BOUGHT THIS GAME SO THAT A FRIEND OF MINE, WHO IS REALLY INTO NASCAR, WOULD HAVE SOMETHING TO PLAY ON MY PS2 WHEN HE CAME OVER. I WOULD PUT IT IN AND PLAY WITH IT MYSELF EVERY NOW AND THEN. WHEN ANOTHER FRIEND OF MINE WAS THINKING OF GETTING A PS2 (TO REPLACE HIS DC) I PULLED THIS GAME OUT AND WE WENT HEAD TO HEAD. WHAT CAN I SAY? I GOT HOOKED. I GOT SO HOOKED THAT I WAS EAGERLY AWAITING NASCAR HEAT 2002 AFTER SEEING THE GRAPHICS. THAT DID NOT STOP ME FROM CONTINUING TO PLAY THIS GAME. BESIDES, THIS IS THE ONLY VERSION THAT I CAN CRASH SOMEONE WHEN I'M FEELING THAT THAT SOMEONE IS TRYING TO "INTIMIDATE" ME. INTIMIDATE THIS.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Nascar Heat for PS2   August 10, 2001

This game is HIGHLY underated on this site from people who dont like nascar. I am an average Nascar fan. Most people that have reviewed before have NOT been nascar fans. This game delivers a real bumper to bumper feel. The cars are very realistic and they still have Dale Earnhardt because he passed away after this was made. They have most of the tracks including Daytona. If you like to crash cars than this game would also be very good for you because the physics are awsome and make you spin and fly in the air when you hit hard, and they spinout when you get a medium hit. One of my favorite things to do is just turn around and hit cars headfirst, then peices fly around the track and stay there for about a lap, thats cool. You have to time your pit stops as the same time as the other cars. Graphicaly this game will break down occasionly but it does not take away from the fun at all. The sounds that the cars are very authentic and represent Nascar very well. The cars in this game are very detailed and have all of the logos that the cars in real life have. I feel that the people who made this game were true Nascar fans, and its a shame that the people who have been reviewing it havnt been. So if you like Nasvar AT ALL than this is definatly the game for you. Oh yeah, theres one thing i forgot, the drafting model in this game is the best yet and makes all the difference in the races. (P.S. I have played Nascar Heat 2002 for PS2 and although it is a fine game with a little better graphics, this game is more realistic and fun)
